To over, en under. Jeg roter. Tilbake til start.
Trådene strekkes og det brister. Litt vann hjelper.
Jeg blir rolig. Føttene senkes til pedalen. Blikket spisses. Rytmen inntas. Jeg er i takt.
Ingen forstyrrelser. Jeg er på en øy. Isolert. Ingen får komme.
Kontroll. Jeg har den. Nå.
Trådene klippes.
Viewpoints / Utsiktspunkter
MA KHIO 2018
The project «Viewpoints», a part of my MA in Fashion and Costume at Oslo National Academy Of The Arts, is letting the thread take the lead. I explore thematics of isolation and presence, and express feelings of childhood-longing. The clothing and textile work titled «Woven Perspectives» is an exploration of weaving as a traditional craft technique. The time consuming and craft based work in the loom has also been research in my own work practice. I experienced how such repetitive work demanded calmness and focus. I have been fascinated by horizons where colors are in consistent change, and how one as an observer reacts to the changes. This inspired the work of leading threads in a certain order around different surfaces to create dynamic color perceptions. These surfaces formed the basis for further work on textiles. The textiles as based on general weaving structures, and I have worked to create optical illusions and dynamic shapes by varying the distance between the threads. When weaving I have used a traditional "flat-loom" which constitutes an analogous process. The choices I have made when designing the clothes are based on the fabric's premises; «To cut your clothes after your cloth», which is an old rational way of thinking sustainability. I reconstructed a circle shape from an old Russian folk costume and re-designed it into parts of the garments.
The master project marks the start of a cross disciplinary practice between design and crafts, and responds as a counter force to a high-speed clothing industry that demands efficiency. The project was significant on a personal level because it was a preparation for a new life, when moving from my hometown Oslo to a small village in the Norwegian inlands. The work reflects upon the past and the present in relation to transcending from one life scenario to an other.
Film by Helle Lie Jakobsen as a part of her MA-project "Viewpoints"/ MA in Fashion Design at Oslo National Academy Of The Arts in 2018. The film documents the process from thread to textile and follows the hands along the way.
